Message from the Chair
Dear Prospective Students and Parents,
If you are looking for a department that can truly prepare you to become an AI-ready and industry-ready computer engineering professional, rather than simply sitting in classrooms and listening to lectures, I sincerely invite you to choose the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering (CSIE) at National Penghu University of Science and Technology (NPU).
Our department focuses on Artificial Intelligence Technologies and Applications and Internet of Things (IoT) Technologies and Applications as its core development directions. All of our courses are designed around hands-on learning and Problem-Based Learning (PBL). From the first year, students are encouraged to join laboratories, participate in research projects, competitions, and capstone projects, and start building real systems and portfolios—rather than waiting until their junior or senior year to experience their first project.

1) Industry-Aligned Curriculum — We Teach What Industry Actually Uses
We focus on AI, machine learning, computer vision, IoT, Edge AI, embedded systems, and cybersecurity. Our teaching facilities are equipped with GPUs, FPGAs, RISC-V platforms, 3D printers, microcontrollers, and edge-AI devices, allowing students to gain hands-on experience with the same technologies currently used in industry.
2) Strong Hands-On Training — Start Research and Projects in Year One
Our capstone and project training spans three consecutive semesters, and students may enter professors’ laboratories as early as their first year.
Students accumulate experience in system development, competitions, and academic publishing. Many of our students have published papers in IEEE international journals and IEEE international conferences while still undergraduates.
In addition, a significant number of students participate in international academic activities, including presenting papers at IEEE conferences in the United States, Japan, and Vietnam, and visiting world-class universities such as Stanford University, University of California–Irvine, University of California–San Diego, Waseda University, Ritsumeikan University, and Yamaguchi University.
They also visit leading global companies such as Apple’s Silicon Valley campus in San Jose and TSMC’s Kumamoto plant in Japan.
